The Ship Inn describes itself as a proper village pub and has been in the capable hands of Landlady Heather Brown and son Mathew for 9 years. Think hearty welcomes, roaring log fires, well kept ales and lovingly prepared traditional menus and you won’t be too far short of the mark.

You will find the Ship Inn at Cockwood on the river Exe between the seaside resort of Dawlish and Starcross a stones throw to the North. Its about a twenty minute drive from the Cathedral City of Exeter. Drive through pretty villages and pass the historical Powderham Castle on the way to the pub.

Style and Character

Exposed stonework, thick oak beams and wide and cheerful fireplaces in keeping with the white-washed exterior of the pub. Warm welcomes with menus providing ample choice with a large dollop of classic pub fare. Cask Marque Ales.

Pub classics like Home Made Pie of the Day with Short Crust Pastry £9.95, Butchers Venison and Cranberry Sausages on Mashed Potato with Onion Gravy £8.95 or the Traditional Ploughman’s £7.95 all feature. Cracking reputation for locally caught day boat fish on the specials boards. The pub is happy to cater for people with dietary issues.

I enjoyed two starters. Melt in the mouth and succulent Tempura King Prawns with a zingy Chilli Dip (7.25) followed by well seasoned, moist and full flavoured Lamb Meatballs in a rich Tomato Sauce (£5.75).  All the food arriving promptly with brisk, attentive and friendly service.  View menus.
