Forest Fungi, in Dawlish Warren, is a farm shop with a difference. Not only will you find local award winning produce, sourced from the South West, but a wide range of fresh, organic, mushrooms that have been grown and farmed on site!
Scott Marshall’s ever-growing interest for mushrooms and passion for food led him to open the family-run farm shop in July 2013.
In just under 2 years Forest Fungi has become a great success through growing and supplying high quality, gourmet, mushrooms. Local consumers include restaurants and top chefs in Devon. Companies such as Gribbles, Luscombe Organic Drinks and Devonshire Farmhouse are just a few. The mushrooms are sold not only in the farm shop, but at food shows, food markets and even online.
Behind the scenes, a great deal of hard work goes into creating the perfect conditions for the mushrooms to grow. The ‘Shroom Room’ was designed to do just that. With the help of humidifiers, heaters, coolers, air circulation fans, lighting and water, the optimum micro climate is created for wild shiitake mushrooms to grow.
The technique is obviously successful as the demand has spiralled and 60-120 kilograms of Shiitake mushrooms are produced every week!
The Shroom Room is open for tours for those who would like to learn more. Chef schools, children’s schools, social clubs, charities and members of the public with an interest are among all those who have visited so far.
Forest Fungi is open 6 days a week and has numerous expansion plans in place, including viewing windows, grow cams and a greater range of mushroom species!
