Deer Park Country House Hotel Review

I was lucky enough to spend an evening up at Deer Park. Looking forward to this, I traveled up with my girlfriend one Saturday afternoon for a nights stay, dinner and breakfast. The journey was uneventful. I was however subjected to the usual battle for control of the radio. 5 Live and sports coverage was met with disgruntled moans. Pop music won the day. A happy girlfriend is worth its weight in gold I promise you!

A stones throw from the A30, Deer Park is conveniently located while retaining its country house feel. Arriving late afternoon and met by enthusiastic and friendly staff, we were told to come in, relax and enjoy our stay. We did just that. So refreshing to be put at ease by friendly, welcoming staff in unfamiliar surroundings.

Deer Park

Deer Park Country House Hotel in all its Glory

Politely shown to our room we were greeted with sumptuous pillows and bedding, bags of room, glorious views out over the grounds and one spotlessly clean bathroom. This set us up rather nicely for dinner.

Dressed appropriately, drinks were taken in the bar where we were briefly joined by the hotel manager for an impromptu chat. Once again we were made to feel most welcome before being shown to our table.

I ordered the Duck to start while my partner preferred the Mussels. I have to say both were pleasing to the eye and just as tasty.

Our mains were even better. Roast Rump of Devon Lamb, Spring Greens, Dauphinoise Potatoes, Red Wine and Rosemary Jus for me. And if your interested, the Lamb was perfectly cooked and seasoned but those top marks must go to the Dauphinoise Potatoes. Rich, creamy and the last thing to be cleared from my plate. I always leave the best till last!

My girlfriend enjoyed the trio of fish – Bream, Salmon, Hake, Broad Bean and Potato Salad, Sauce Vierge. Simply prepared and cooked to perfection I could see from across the table that my girlfriend was savouring every mouthful. This i thought was scoring me lots of good points as this little visit was something of a surprise!

Dessert was a fairly simple decision. Dark Chocolate Brownie with Hazelnut Praline and Salted Caramel Ice Cream for the both of us. This, i’m sorry to say was devoured in seconds as it was just too good!

And the great thing about the evening was not really noticing the service. We were never left waiting and the plates seem to come and go exactly when we thought they should. What most impressed us however, were the big bright smiles from every one of our servers. A very happy team served us and it showed.

Reflecting on our visit, it really was hard to fault. I think what made it memorable were the staff. Friendly, helpful staff. It is often people that make the difference and top marks must go to Deer Park for that. Alongside some absolutely cracking food and two very happy diners!
